Not all that long ago, having an outdoor fireplace of any type in Denver, or anywhere else along the Front Range was exceedingly rare. Such backyard entertaining features were either the domain of do it yourself masons or they were the commissioned works of the wealthy, since it takes a lot of time and expertise to lay bricks or stone in an outdoor setting to burn wood and vent the smoke far above the people sitting around the fire. Even for a skilled craftsman, the project could take weeks from design to the first use of the fireplace.
